About Dive Japan
Dive Japan is an independent guide to scuba diving across the Japanese archipelago. It has been online since the 1990s, quietly growing into one of the longest-running English resources for divers exploring Japan’s waters — from the drift ice of Hokkaido to the coral reefs of the far south.
Our story
The site is built and maintained by Junko Aoyama Pascoe, with dive reports and feature articles contributed over the years by divers including the late Charles T. Whipple. What began as a handful of trip notes has grown into a living map of where, when and how to dive in Japan.
What you’ll find here
- Regional guides to Japan’s main diving areas — Hokkaido, the Izu Islands, Ogasawara, Yonaguni and more.
- First-hand dive reports, marine-life notes and underwater video.
- Maps that place each region in context, and a reading list for going deeper.
What we are not
Dive Japan is an information resource, not a travel agency or booking service. We don’t arrange trips or sell gear — we simply share what we’ve learned so you can plan your own diving with confidence. Conditions, access and operators change, so always confirm details locally and dive within your training and limits.
